Field notebook, Nagano mews · Nagano, Japan
Small-group encounters, estate bird surveys and thoughtful raptor care, all kept to the unhurried pace the birds prefer. Come to watch, or to learn. Both are welcome.
Birds of prey reward patience. A hawk that is comfortable on its perch shows you how it hears, how it watches the sky and how it prepares to fly. A hurried crowd rarely sees any of that. So we keep our groups small, our schedule open and our voices low.
Everything we offer grows out of that idea. You might spend a morning with our resident captive-bred birds, walk your own land with an ornithologist to learn who already lives there, or sit down with us to review the way a mews is set up. Whichever you choose, the birds' comfort sets the pace, and you leave knowing a little more than when you arrived.
There is no need to arrive with experience. Curiosity is plenty.
Encounter groups never exceed six guests, so everyone has a clear view and a moment of quiet with the birds.
We work only with captive-bred raptors, and we are open about the registration and permission rules that apply in Japan.
A printed field card, a written species list or a care report: something to read again at home, with photographs where possible.
If heavy rain or strong heat would trouble the birds, we pause the session and rebook it at no charge.
Barn owl · wingspan about 80–95 cm
Four plain steps, with no forms to fill beyond a short enquiry.
Share a preferred date, how many are coming and whether children will join. A few words about what you are curious about helps too.
A member of the team writes back within two working days to settle details and answer anything you are wondering about.
Visit our mews in Nagano, or welcome us to your estate. Hold a bird on the glove or simply watch from a seat; both are equally welcome.
Depending on the service, you receive a field card, a species list or a care report to keep and revisit.
Field-guide species plates, as kept in our notebook.
We would rather show you plain facts than make large claims. These are the commitments built into every service.

Careful keeping is mostly small, steady observation. Here is a sample page from a falconer's care log, the kind of record we keep for every bird and help private keepers set up for their own.
| Date | Weight (g) | Food given | Weather | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Oct | 812 | quail, 60 g | clear, cool | alert, preened well |
| 11 Oct | 806 | chick, 55 g | light cloud | calm during session |
| 12 Oct | 809 | quail, 60 g | breezy | rested, no flying |
| 13 Oct | 811 | chick, 55 g | rain, mild | session paused |
| 14 Oct | 814 | quail, 60 g | clear | steady, feet checked |
Weight, food, weather and a line of notes. Taken together they show how a bird is really doing, long before anything looks wrong. If you keep birds of prey, or are weighing the idea thoughtfully, our consultation can help you build the same habit.

The next step is simply a short note. Tell us what interests you and, if you like, a date that suits. A team member will reply personally within two working days to talk through options, with nothing to commit to and no questions that need an expert answer.
New to birds of prey? That is perfectly fine. Most of our guests are.
